Philly Day Trip: Longwood Gardens

Chocolate and Lace shares a day trip from Philadelphia to Longwood Gardens.

I love living in the heart of a city but sometimes you need to stretch your legs a bit further and take a short road trip! This weekend we headed out to the burbs, from Center City Philadelphia, to visit Longwood Gardens. Longwood Gardens is a magnificent conservatory in Kent Square, PA. During the month of December they are running a Longwood Christmas so to get into the holiday spirit I brought the girls for a trip.

The grounds were stunning with the conservatory breathtaking. From reflection pools to hanging Christmas trees, it was a gorgeous sight to see with loops and turns with the girls excited to see “what’s next”. Gorgeous red, pink and fuchsia poinsettias adorned the entire conservatory. We took home a baby poinsettia that Bailey picked out from the gift shop.

We actually went first thing in the morning, found easy and close parking and had a mild crowd. We arrived by 10 am. Although I’ve heard the lights are quite the site to see, I really wanted to enjoy the natural light and horticulture. Kids under 4 were free and it was very stroller friendly. There is a cafe and plenty of easily accessible bathrooms and changing stations.

The baby loved the children’s garden and giggled for almost an hour touching all the fountains. It was an easy and safe place for kids to explore and be delighted by water.

My favorite greenhouse was full of roses, every color of the rainbow. Large bloomed tea roses filled up the green house and Mia went by smelling everyone she could reach. Which of course made me swoon as her middle name is Rose. In the winter it can be hard to find opportunities to explore nature and Longwood Gardens was a magical option.

Another favorite of mine was the greenhouse full of amazing succulents big and small. I felt like we were in the desert surrounded by exotic succulents and cacti which was giving me inspo for visiting Arizona in 2019. I loved showing me the different textures and colors of the plants. I may have also taken one or two home from the gift shop as well.

I am looking forward to visiting in the spring or summer and taking a picnic. The girls loved being able to run around in the wide open grass even if it was cold! Have you visited Longwood Christmas? Let me know in the comments below!
