A Walk Through Watch Hill

One of Rhode Island’s best kept secrets can now be seen all over their newest (and famous) resident’s instagram, and it’s well deserved. On the corner of Westerly and just past the bustling traffic of Misquamicut State Beach lyes breathtaking views of Rhode Island’s most southwestern point, Watch Hill. I have never not seen a blue sky in Watch Hill, where you can take in the views while chasing waves off of Block Island Sound.

Headed out on a perfect Sunday with one of my girlfriends and our kids, we saw some of the most quintessential parts of the town through a walk about Watch Hill. First on the agenda was a beach day this time checking out East Beach. The best tip I can give you is that if you plan to visit Watch Hill for the day or beach, go early. There are two little parking lots that fill up fast…by 9 am on a weekend fast. Miss these two and you will spend your time driving in a circle. Be prepared to spend up to $40 towards the parking monopoly. What I wouldn’t give to own a parking lot in this town…

We hiked up the hill past the prestigious Ocean House Hotel as it  sits tall and charming overlooking the Atlantic. A fan of swanky hotels, Ocean House is on my list as it’s one of only eight Forbes Triple Five-Star Hotels in the world. Walking along the homes dotting the ocean are no less spectacular and it’s easy to get lost in a day dream as you can see through each door way to the ocean. Midway through the hydrangea lined street and tucked in between two houses is a pathway that leads you down to East Beach.

Once down on East Beach we set up camp and headed right into the ocean where I said bon voyage to my favorite pair of sunglasses as a giant wave took B and I under. She took it like a champ and giggled her way right back into the waves as I periodically growled back at the ocean for taking my sunnies. Off into the horizon lyes a gorgeous light house with another stunning house within view, Taylor Swift’s. Tay Tay moved in back in 2013 to the house on the corner where signs marked ‘I knew you were trouble when you walked in, NO TRESPASSING’ are lined. The home is breathtaking. Also anchored with the back of the Ocean House and this beach is no short of views. Only thing it’s missing is public bathrooms and snacks.

Down at the bottom of the hill is another beach option that has near by bathrooms and smaller waves, Watch Hill Carousel and Beach. This beach charges a small fee to entry but usually worth it after a sandy afternoon with beach shower access. One of the nations oldest carousel’s is still in working order here, built in approximately 1883 as the Flying Horse Carousel. All horses as appropriately named, Bailey picked a blonde one. A short ride later, we were ready for ice cream and headed over to St. Clair Annex for hot dogs and cones.

At what age can a child handle an ice cream cone? Let me tell you, it’s not 4. Dripping away in the hot summer sun the kids sat on the harbor and watched the boats come in and out. Almost every raft had a dog happily wagging it’s tail for the ocean rides. For pickle lovers, try Ten Sandwiches and for those who want to sit and enjoy a culinary experience, the Olympia Tea Room is always a classic choice.

Until next time Watch Hill. Bon Voyage.
